BIO 232 @ PCC - Week 6

Posted by J. on Sunday, February 13, 2011

Here are the videos for this week. I'm horribly sick right now. I feel awful, on the one hand, but on the other, being laid out in bed all day yesterday gave me the time to re-attempt uploading every time youtube timed out....

Sorry about the late post this week, guys - Comcast has been dinking with our internet all week, which means that I haven't been able to maintain a connection to Youtube long enough to upload video (each 1 hour chunk of video usually takes about 5-6 hours of uninterrupted connection to upload) until last night.

No lab video this week, thanks to the lab midterm, which also means no quiz in lab this week. (Woot!) Not much to add beyond that, except to point out a web resource that some of my own group members weren't aware of, which is EasyBib - it's a great service for composing a project bibliography, especially if your sources are online - just throw a URL at it and it'll spit back everything you need, in alphabetized MLA format. Mucho helpful.

Some rather nice warm fuzzies this week - I had no less than a half dozen fellow classmates come up to me and thank me for posting videos; thanks in turn, guys, for letting me use you to force myself to put in the effort.

Another new tool to share with you this week, a webservice by the name of Keepvid that will allow you to pull down .FLVs or .MP4s of youtube videos. Since Itunes can recognize MP4s and let you download them to your Ipod/Iphone/Ipad, this could be a mighty handy way to take your studying with you. Also, as a side note, the new (well, new to me) video camera came in this week which means the videos are now in HD (TM) [Yes, really.] Don't neglect to swap to a higher resolution when you're watching, if your device can support it; it'll make the text and figures a heck of a lot easier to make out.

Week 2 is done, and thus it's time to post the bits and pieces. As a side note, if you want to just grab any of the videos as an mp3 to listen to (like the lecture this week that's really just a static image with audio), the website http://www.youtube-mp3.org/ will convert any youtube video for you for free. I'm not sure yet if I'll do a separate flashcard set for this week's lab, as it's a combination of old and new info - if I do, it'll be up in a day or two. In the meantime, there's a link to the flashcards I did for OIT that have most of the material, and our wonderful classmate Ida has done a quick video of her own for the eye here.

P.S. Sorry about the 10 separate videos for the lab; still working with the overheating problem on my Canon - an alternate video solution should be available by next week's class.

BIO 232 @ PCC - Week 1

And we're back... somewhat. Last term, in BIO 231 at PCC, I wasn't very good at all about finding people and reasons to study, other than staying on campus from dawn to dusk on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This term, I'm trying to reach out a bit more and offer resources to other students again, thus prompting me to generate some more. We'll see how that goes, but it really helped before. I did throw together a number of new flashcards and such last term for 231, and if that stuff would be useful to you, you're welcome to look through the existing flashcards on Flashcard Exchange here. Also, for those of you just joining the show, don't forget to pick up an application called "Mental Case" for just a few bucks if you own an iPhone/iPod touch, which will allow you to study my notes and thousands of others offline. I've mentioned it a couple of times before, and I still love it and use it like crazy. Everyone else, sorry - you'll need a net connection to study unless you want to use the printing function on the website and a whole stack of cards.

In any case, here are some resources for our first week back.

PCC Bio 232 Week 1 Lecture Flashcards
OIT Bio 232 Week 1 Lab Flashcards (yep, these are a recycle, but I don't see any point in making a new copy that'll be 90% of the same stuff, especially when Professor Christie has a large number of alternative study materials here that'll work just as well)
PCC Bio 232 Week 1 Lab Videos are below - apparently the Canon 7d that I was shooting with (along with all of the rest of that product line) has an issue with overheating when used for video for more than a few minutes, so I'm working on an alternative method for recording - we'll see. Sorry about the horribly jerky quality - video isn't my thing, by choice - I just decided to record on the spur of the moment. Alternately, one of my fellow students has her own videos of the session here.
